How we make our products

This is definitely a simple operation. The most sophisticated piece of equipment we have is a tiller. The most used piece of equipment is a hoe. Mulching suppresses weeds and preserves moisture. Any irrigation is done with soaker hoses insuring that all of water used is applied to the roots of the plants where it provides the most benefit. Diversity, proper spacing, and crop rotation help keep diseases at bay. Fencing attempts to keep out the hungry rabbits and woodchucks. Row covers are used to protect vulnerable seedlings from insect damage. All crops are harvested by hand at the peak of perfection.

Specialty

We’re known for having an incredible selection of tomato and pepper plants in the spring. We also try to grow unusual and hard to find vegetables like the tiny French beans, Haricots Verts. Other unusual vegetables include Edamame, Cranberry beans, Italian beans, Cipollini onions, and Radicchio. We take extra care that our leeks have extremely long white shanks. They’re really beautiful as well as being tender and flavorful.

Availability of products

As the seasons change so does the mix of products available at the market. In April we start off the year with plants. We offer many different herbs and all kinds of vegetable plants. You can find dozens of pepper and tomato varieties, hardened off and ready to go. Many varieties of annuals and perennials are also available, for transplanting to your garden, or already growing in planters and hanging baskets. Vegetables begin to appear in June with Haricots Verts and specialty onions leading the parade. Edamame are usually ready towards the end of August. Squash, root vegetables and hardy greens make their appearance in the autumn. We attend several Winter Markets at the Monona Terrace. Many cold tolerant and storage vegetables are available, and thanks to the recent addition of a season extending hoop house, we hope to have tomatoes and peppers well into November. Dried flowers are available from mid July on. Fresh Asiatic lily bouquets are available for about 3 weeks beginning mid to late June.
